It was a reaction to the formality and restraint of the Classical period, with composers seeking to convey deep feelings, dramatic contrasts, and rich harmonies. Composers you may recognize from the Romantic era would be Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms. and more.
